Silage Making

We try to start our summer silage making around mid May each year with second cut six to seven weeks later and third cut in September. This is always subject to the weather. The grass is cut with our two Vicon mowers which spread the grass out over the ground and allow it to wilt in the sunshine (assuming that there is any sunshine!). The next day our Kuhn rake then puts 30ft of grass into rows ready for the forage harvester. Our Claas 800 harvester then lifts and chops the grass and blows it into the silage trailer and it is then carted back to the silage pit to be rolled and then eventually covered completely with plastic sheets weighted down with tyres. A neighbouring beef and sheep farm help us with our silage making, and in return we help them with theirs.
